What are Bricks?

Bricks are the building blocks that help in transferring and distributing the load of various constructed segments (beams and pillars, slab, etc.). Apart from providing strength, bricks play an important role in providing aesthetically pleasing finish to buildings. Since bricks are the basic building blocks on which the strength of the load bearing structure depends, due care should be exercised while selecting the bricks.

How to choose good quality bricks in India?

The dimensions of bricks should be 9”X43/8”X23/4” (as per IS 1077 230x110x70 mm)

Bricks should be made of good quality soil (free from salts and alkalies) and water (potable water)

The bricks should be well burnt with characteristic brick red colour

The edges and corners of the brick should be sharp and unbroken. All adjoining edges should be mutually perpendicular

When two bricks are struck against each other they should give a clear metallic ringing sound

Good bricks should have a compressive strength in the range of 75-100 kg/cm2

Weight of a good well burnt brick is around 3 kgs

How To Identify Sub-Standard Bricks?

Under burnt bricks, having yellow / orange hue are weak and their use should be avoided

Bricks should not break when dropped, frog facing up, from a height of 1 metre

Over-burnt bricks are warped and do not form a proper bond with cement mortar and hence should not be used

Bricks of irregular shape should not be used

5

Bricks that exhibit efflorescence and show salt deposits / precipitations on them should not be used

6

Bricks that absorb more than 20% of their dry weight in water, when soaked in water for 24 hours, are not suitable for use in masonry
