Biodiversity Management

Biodiversity is the fundamental fabric of natural capital, weaving in all our planet’s renewable and non-renewable resources. Therefore, it becomes our primary responsibility to preserve and sustain our natural habitat to maintain the ecological balance and ensure climate justice. Minimising biodiversity loss also presents an opportunity towards responsible stewardship while maintaining social and environmental equity.

Our Contribution towards Biodiversity

As an environmentally conscious organisation, Dalmia Bharat is committed to fostering environmentally friendly practices. We have implemented biodiversity and ecosystem management plans in all the regions we operate in to protect the natural resources and create a net positive impact on biodiversity.

To enhance the life of quarries and ensure strategic need-based mining operations, we carry out the judicious blending of low and marginal-grade limestone with cement grade. Responsible mining for biodiversity management remains our focus and we have been planting saplings in the core and buffer zones of mines to minimise the effect of mining on surrounding areas. The topsoil of the mining area that contains vital nutrients for plant growth is also repurposed within the area for plants.

We minimize solid waste generation by utilising crushers for reject boulders to produce aggregates for use in building materials. We also use hydraulic rock breakers where mines are close to habitats and national highways, and use non-electric systems in blasting to reduce ground vibration.

Managing Biodiversity Risks

Our cross-functional team carries out regular environment and safety observations across mines and takes timely corrective actions as per the PDCA cycle in practice. Our risk aversion approach in mining operations helps us minimise biodiversity losses. Additionally, interventions across various sites, beyond our cement and mines’ boundaries, help add a positive biodiversity value through social interventions. Some of the activities helping in positive biodiversity value addition include:

  • Water conservation and harvesting measures beyond fences

  • Native Tree plantations

  • Promotion of organic farming and water efficient agricultural practices

  • Extending clean energy solutions for local communities

Keeping our climate action goals in mind and to ensure that the best biodiversity management practices are being carried out to reduce biodiversity losses, we will continue to forge partnerships and work closely with the community members in the regions we have a presence in. As a strong policy action, we are committed to No Net Loss on the account of greater actions on positive biodiversity value creation.
